Well when i got the custom exhaust manifold installed my under bonnet temps went absolutely crazy. You could literally fry an egg on my bonnet after a quick squirt down the road or even just after a relaxed casual (read: controlled) drive.

So before i cooked the paint on my bonnet i thought i would get some of that exhaust wrap stuff and cover the exhaust manifold since none of the factory heat shield's fit and the damn thing glow's a bright red/yellow after any boosting. After wrapping the exhaust (ill post up some pics tomorrow) i took the car out for a spin and then popped the bonnet to find it significantly cooler. You dont get that sensation of your skin burnning and eye's drying as you look at the turbo like you use to but its still not as cool as i would like. Now if i had the cash i would of just hpc coated the whole setup and got myself a turbo beanie/bag but beggers cant be choosers so im after some simple and effective modz that can be done as sunday afternoon project biggrin.gif

I was thinking along the lines of fabricating a stainless heat shield and cover the underside of the shield with some of that reflective heat shielding material to try and contain heat in the area, any had any experience with such materials?

Something i must comment on was the performance gains i got from just the exhaust wrap. when i took the 6 out for the first time with the wrap it felt like a totally different car, boost was comming on earlier and stronger and the car felt it had gained a substantial amount of hp. I've heard about the "performance gains" from exhaust wrap and increased response due to "hotter air having more velocity" but never really thought much of it. Im not sure if i can attribute the gains to that theory but one things for certain there as gains to be had with a simple mod like this, the amount of performance depending ultimately on your setup.

Unfortunately i happen to have one of the exhaust port runners about an inch from my highly conductive aluminium intercooler piping, id say that the majority of the gains would of been to a cooler ic pipe even though its still pretty damn hot before the intercooler, might have to wrap some exhaust wrap on the start of the ic piping wink.gif

when I first got my 6, I wrapped the ic piping and went straight to the track and watched my car get quicker. I am looking at a way of putting the mazdaspeed protege heat shield on my car, just cause it says MAZDASPEED across it. Effective and adds to the eye appeal. But I am definetly getting the manifold coated within the next 2 weeks

yeah coating is definately the best thing to do, most ppl swear by it although i've never actually seen/felt the stuff in action blush.gif

as far as wrapping the intercooler piping i was thinking that perhaps the air inside the piping is hotter than the air inside the bonnet so by getting a material highly conductive like aluminium to make the ic pipes i was hoping to dissipate some of that heat. I definately see the need to do it were the exhaust manifold is but what about other areas, you actually recorded better results with the whole system wrapped?

I only wrapped from the stock bypass location to the ic, then from the ic to the tb. This took .15 off of my consistant times

what about putting some kind of scoop or bonnet vents in to do that..

my friend owns a familia gtr, and it comes stnd with three little circular vents a couple of inches from the grill.. after driving for a while and the occasional race you could see and feel the heat comming from the bonnet. if his car didn't have these vents then i reckon that he would probably cook his paint

cheers redneckmx6, ill give that a shot im pretty sure i have enough exhaust wrap left.

Air vents would definately help but they arent really an option atm, if i look into respray the thing (probably will) then ill consider that then. I might be able to punch some holes somewhere thru the font grille tho, that should decrease the temps quite a bit but might require some hard work cutting metal...

Something like the old Ford Seirra/ Escort(UK) bonnet vents would go down nicely; but as you said they arn't an option at the moment....Maybe you could bang around with the bonnet left off for a while, try to only drive around "low crime" areas though, as theives may try stealing you motor while your stoped at the trafic lights.lol. rolleyes.gif

huh.gif Good stuff. So both the butt dyno and track times have confirmed that such a simple thing can improve performance? I'll have to consider this. It's all about making the stuff you have as efficient as possible.

Somthing you might want to consider is Washers on the mounts on the bonnet

Yeap an old trick we used. Washers to lift the bakc of the bonnet up ot let the air escape.

Yep your bonnet at he back does not close to seal but it lets the air out and works a treat in summer, mate did it to a S/C VR HSV senator, even in winter water was never a problem except in real cold nights the bottom of the windscrean would be hot but the top cold an moist

actually, i found about 3 sources here in sydney, im sure they can arrange postage for u if there are no local suppliers...

i actually got mine from revolution racegear in auburn, its called DEI heat wrap and seems to do the job quite well, got 50ft by 1inch which is more than enough for my headers (still got half left) for approx $70, pic below.

There is also a large engineering/industrial supplier called blackwoods that supply some fibreglass stuff for approximately the same price so they might be worth checking out as well, there online catelogue is here.

Might be worth wrapping those pretty headers if things get hot under the bonnet, but then again you have a real cold air intake unlike myself so it probably wont make any difference smile.gif

A lot of people I know use the header wrap on their intakes......works pretty much the same.......or are you looking for that tin foil looking stuff?
