It sounds like the bands are loose, and possibly some of the clutch packs are fried. Is the box shift kitted by any chance?? It sounds like the gearbox must have previously been in a powerful car, or driven hard/or into the ground. Unfortunantley, due to the complexities of an auto gearbox, this isn't a DIY job. You will need to take it to a trans specialist, and have them tear it down and inspect it.

Auto's are very expensive things to start changing, upgrading and the like. Talk to the workshop you are going to have the work done. Try and see if they will give you a quote on tearing the box down and assessing is condition. This will be a few hundred dollar job usually.

If your lucky, it will just need some new fluid, a new filter, and a few adjustments, otherwise you get into new bands, new clutch packs, and new shift solenoids. Hope its some help, if you have any more questions, go ahead and ask.
