Apart from what has been published in Australian Muscle Car Magazine, here is an update on this event....
2004 Torana Nationals Update/Review:
Venue: Holden Performance Driving Centre, Beenleigh, Qld (near Gold Coast)
Dates: Easter 2004
Advertising: - Continuing with Australian Muscle Car Magazine with slight edition variations on presentation, featured cars etc. - 'Torana Nationals' attachment to the south facing billboards for the Holden Performance Driving Centre on the Pacific Highway – t.b.c
Ex-Race cars: - It is expected at least six ex-race cars will be present including the 1978 and 1979 '05' cars, 1974 HDT L34, 1970 HDT Peter Brock / Bob Morris entry, 1972 HDT 28C, 24C 1972 Replica, 1979 Bob Morris Dieter Quester entry, 1973 Bob Morris Ron Hodgson entry. ( Torana's residing in the Bathurst Car Museum are likely to make the treck north t.b.c) - The race cars may perform demonstration laps at minimum speed of the complex during the Saturday and Sunday. Bring plenty of film/memory sticks! t.b.c
Past Heroes: - Past drivers/mechanics/team managers including Harry Firth, (Ian Tate, Colin Bond, Alan Grice, Bob Morris and Charlie O’Brien. t.b.c) - Apart from Paul Morris it is hoped some current drivers (V8 Supercar/Konica Series) will also be present over the weekend.
Overnight Parking: - On site open parking will be available for all trailers but only a limited number of undercover secure car parking spaces are available. Contact Event Management if you require your trailered entry to remain at the complex for the duration of the show. - Note that the recommended accommodation (Beenleigh Yatala Motor Inn) has excellent parking facilities for both cars and trailers and is only nine minutes from the HPDC complex. See 'Accomodation' below..
Car Classes: - No major changes here however if enough non-Class 1 original vehicles (like, say, an LH SLR 3300, UC SL/E) enter then a separate class (eg, class 4) may be created to allow them to compete (award only, not judged) away from the XU1's/L34s/A9Xs etc. This decision will be based on entry numbers. - Awards for classes 2 and 3 (and possibly class 4 as discussed above) will be made at the discretion of the event managers AS PER ENTRY FORM.
Judging: - For Class 1 entrants (judged) wheels other than the oem style may be fitted without points penalty if they are of the same period. This allows the fitment of Sprint masters for LJ, Hotwires, for LH/LX. The fitment of the oem style steel wheel/trims will score more points than the allowed replacements mentioned above for LH/LX. However if date stamped 72 – 74 Sprint masters are fitted you will receive the same amount of points for LJ as the nibless wheel and trim etc. - Judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
Display: - Entrant's vehicles will be displayed on an approximate 800m long section of the complex bitumen circuit. This means that the display of vehicles will be unaffected by any inclement weather. - On Saturday all vehicles will be presented in class order (1,2, etc) while Sunday's display is not class specific. On Sunday you may display your vehicle wherever you want on the nominated 800m section of the complex circuit, and if weather permits on the grassed areas. The idea is to have you set up behind your cars on the grass making it more comfortable on the Saturday, and Sunday to spread the cars out with Marquees etc… - Bunting, fencing, shade covers are acceptable but these may not be mechanically fixed to the circuit surface (ie. no hammering in pegs etc). - It is currently being investigated whether entrants will be allowed paced laps of the complex in their entered vehicles during the Sunday. This will be subject to approval by the HPDC and reasonable insurance coverage.
On arrival (Good Friday): - Entrants will receive their Information Pack and Accreditation at registration. Please note the Registration Point is only accessible for entrants and their invited guest. The centre is not officially open to the public. Official welcome for all entrants, guests is 4pm.
General: - As mentioned earlier, the ex-race cars may perform demo laps on the open portion of the complex over the weekend. After the completion of the demo lap the vehicles will be on general display on the skidpan area. - No alcohol is permitted within the HPDC complex. - The Holden Motorsport Gallery within the complex has on display a wide range of historic Holdens through to more recent race cars. The Gallery also has a wide range of merchandise available. Even better is the opportunity to have a look at Paul Morris's V8 Supercar team workshop! - The Presentation Dinner Sunday night (for all entrants/partners and their invited guests) is likely to be a catered sit down meal held under lights on the skidpan area. Tables will be placed so that each has a good view of the awards presentations. Alcohol will be available (not byo). Following the meal and presentations there will be a memorabilia auction where such things as an original (& unworn!) HDT jacket, old slick for an LJ, framed XU2 letter from Harry Firth to GMH (and many other items) will be auctioned off.
Merchandise: - Apart from the merchandise available from the Gallery, the usual assortment of caps, t-shirts and soft drink can holders will be available as well as some rather unusual souvenirs of the Torana Nationals experience. It is also hoped to have participation from some of the regional Holden dealers.
Accommodation: - The recommended accommodation is the Beenleigh Yatala Motor Inn. It has excellent tariffs for entrants (mention attendance of the HPDC event when booking), good parking for cars and trailers, a restaurant, pool and is only nine minutes from the HPDC complex. Additionally it is also close to most major Gold Coast theme parks (MovieWorld, DreamWorld and Wet'nWild) for those non-HPDC moments! - To contact the Motel, Ph: 07 3807 2555 , Fax: 07 3287 5313 or see their website at: http://www.powerup.com.au/~lloyds.
Security: - This will be handled by the Event Management and Officials within the complex.
Other News: - It is hoped to have a Muscle Car Events Australia Website operational by January 1 next year where updates for this and any other planned MCE will be posted. - 'Giant Killers' Bathurst videos are on the way, with the original b&w footage of he 1972 race, Manchamp footage from 1974/5 and HDT End of an Era, this is approx 110 minutes and comes from Harry Firths private collection, which was originally done in 1979.. XU-1s on the Mountain ‘the video’ will be released soon and this video is awesome with narrated documentary style and entrants video’s, Firth and Tate talk about the development of the XU-1, plus racing and funny stories off circuit, digital stills and over 100 XU-1s on video. Out soon!! Both likely to be available on DVD. - Depending on the level of entrant support this year, the Torana Nationals may become a regular biennial event, possibly hosted in different states (subject to the availability of suitable venues). It is unlikely that all clashes with existing car show(s) can be avoided given the limited number of long weekends available and the large number of car events occurring throughout the year. (eg EasterNats)
tbc = to be confirmed
