Most of us have been in one, its got to be one of the worst feelings to see a car seconds before it plow's into your pride and joy, take the following steps to ensure you get the proper help and act within the law. For those that have been lucky enough to not experience such a thing im sure this post will be very useful, as you know accidients cant be the fault of either drivers so its important that you do things properly. Most importantly no matter how trustworthy and genuine a person may seem do everything you can to ensure that you can prove what happened. Go get yourself a disposable camera, or keep one in the car, and take photos of debris, skid marks and accident damage, this was the only thing that helped me in fighting a dodgy case that was claimed against me, without it i would have paid out for someone elses stupidity!

1) Stop Immediately. Protect the area to prevent other crashes from occuring. Remove anything that has fallen from the vehicle and may endanger the safety of others. You must call the police and emergency services if anyone is killed or injured.

2) Also contact the police in 24 hours if:
- The other person fails to stop or exchange details
- One or more of the vehicles need to be towed
- A driver appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
In ACT all accidents must be reported to the police within 24 hours.

3) The accident details you need to collect include:
- The date and time of the accident
- Location of the accident
- Full name, address and phone number of witnesses
- Name of the police officer, their station and contact number

4) The details you need to get from the other driver:
- The make and model of the car and registration number
- Drivers full name, address and date of birth
- Drivers driving licence number
- Drivers contact telephone number
- If the driver is not the owner of the vehicle then get the contact details of the owner including the address and phone number.
- Insurance details including the type of insurance policy and policy number
